'Jury Duty' Identity Theft Scam Reports on the Rise

Visa is alerting banks and their customers about a new "jury duty" identity theft scam. Criminals are cold calling people and asking for their personal information—such as dates of birth, Social Security numbers and even credit card numbers—claiming the sensitive information is needed to verify their eligibility for jury duty. Noting that so-called jury scams have occurred for years, the FBI a resurgence of the problem in recent months. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone; they generally correspond with prospective jurors through the mail.
